Bamarru Plains - May 2013

This small but stylish safari camp style resort is located just under 3 hours drive from Darwin. “Bamurru Plains is located on Swim Creek Station, a 303 sq km coastal buffalo pastoral property near Point Stuart in the Mary River Region. The property encompasses a variety of habitat including vast river frontage, coastal floodplains, savannah woodland, and paperbark swamps. The station is 10 kms from Kakadu National Park’s western boundary (100kms from Jabiru in Kakadu) and just over 100 kms east of Darwin.”

It is a fully inclusive arrangement of meals, drinks and activities. Individual bungalows are dotted throughout the camp, and are screened from mosquitoes. We drove down from Darwin but it is possible to fly in by light plane. It is open during the dry season April - October and they do open for a fishing season in March.

The highlights are travelling by airboat through the wetlands, as you speed pass, flocks of birds rise with you and you almost feel like you are flying with them. There are opportunities to spot crocodiles and then cruise amongst groves of ancient paperbarks. It is everything you think Kakadu can offer and more because you can access areas that are inaccessible by road. A fabulous experience and highly recommended.
