Most Australians have heard of Roland-Garros where the French Open is held each year. It is where the great Australian Tennis Player, Margaret Court won five Grand Slam Titles, the first in 1962 and the last in 1973.
But Roland Garros is generally not on the tourist trail when Australians visit Paris, the city of love but it should be. After visiting Notre Dame, the Eiffel tower and the Louvre, why not visit the Bois De Boulogne where Roland Garros is situated, within an 845 Hectare Public Park on the western edge of Paris. The Bois De Boulogne is the place for those travellers who need a break from the walking pace of the normal tourist sites of Paris. After a few days of dealing with crowds and concrete pavers under feet, the Bois de Boulogne is where you go for a jog, a long walk, a bike ride or even to go boating on the lake. It is a beautiful get away from the hustle and bustle but only two metro stops from the Arc de Triomphe.
There are two Metro stations from which you can access the Bois de Boulogne; Porte d’Auteuil (Line 2) and Porte Dauphine (Line 10). Both Metro Stations are a good walk from the lakes so you will need to be prepared for a 10-15 minute walk (or a quick taxi ride) before you enjoy the beauty of the park landscape around Lake Inferieur. On the way back, if you haven’t already visited the Arc de Triomphe, you can jump off the metro two stops away from Porte Dauphine.
Of course if you prefer a more landscaped beauty to do some civilized strolling around, you cannot do any better than a visit to the Luxembourg Gardens.
