Sicily - European family holiday - Jul 2023

We enjoyed an amazing 2-week road trip through Sicily; what a place – so much generosity & hospitality from the relaxed Sicilians. This island has seen centuries of ego come & go, each leaving its own mark. These are certainly a strong & robust people who are immensely proud to be Sicilian & enjoy smiling their way through their days!

Sicily has been at the crossroads of civilisations for millennia, with an amazing mix of history… Byzantine beauty, Arab craftwork, Normans cathedrals & palaces, Greek art & architecture, Italian flair, hospitality & food!

We began our journey in Palermo the dynamic & slightly hectic capital.

Drove through the centre of the island, thoroughly enjoying a stay in Enna – a lovely gem literally in the centre of Sicily, this ancient city perched at 1000 feet complete with Costello, amazing views, lovely people & great food!

Charming Ortigia Island perhaps my favourite – first built by the Greeks in 734BC this old town is a wonderful maze of picturesque alleyways, artisan shops, homes, restaurants & fabulous Sicilian hospitality! Little beaches & coves perfect for cooling off in the clear blue water! It has a lovely calm & generous feel.

Mt Etna – she rises beautifully from this island of Sicily.

At 3357 feet she is the highest most active volcano in Europe. You can see her from almost everywhere. We drove up to Etna & it was spectacular!

A visit to the Valle Dei Templi Agrigento (Valley of the Temples) – amazing ancient Greek Art & Architecture built mostly in the 5th Century BC. A wonderfully laid back & easy place to wander around.
