Sidewalks of San Francisco - Apr 2015

I’ve just returned from a family holiday to San Francisco, April 2015 delivered beautiful weather to enjoy this energetic city.

San Francisco, in northern California, is a city on the tip of a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. A hilly landscape dotted with colourful Victorian houses and incredible views at every corner this city has soul and the sidewalks are littered with interesting people and their stories past and present.

Full of eclectic fashion, buskers and groovy shops & restaurants, this is a city to make you smile. We rode the cable cars, much to the delight of my 12 year old son as he hung off the side up and down the hills, we rode the bus across the golden gate bridge and happily watched the mass of sea lions at the wharf bask in the sun.

Our true delights came from our unplanned wandering of the city.. Admiration for the incredible architecture  everywhere you looked and the surprises around each corner, the chocolate shop that had been there since the 1920’s and still making and selling the best chocolate! The busker playing the most incredible drum solo on a drum kit made from plastic buckets.

We literally spent hours walking around the city, stopping for homemade ice-cream as we came across Swensen’s perched beautifully on a corner in its elegant Victorian building, original sign still in place. And wandering the sidewalks in the evening looking for the best Italian for dinner that night.. We were never disappointed.

There is a strong culinary scene in the city and its easy to move between cuisines and districts ensuring your days meals are delicious and diverse. Whether its lunch from a great food truck at SOMA Street Food Park, Clam Chowder at the Wharf or Italian, Chinese, Latino, Japanese… you name it, its there and delicious!

The centre of the 60’s psychedelia movement was Haight-Ashbury, the oldest structure in the city is in the Mission District where many of San Francisco Spanish pioneers are buried. The Cable Car museum tells the story of a city rocked in 1906 by an earthquake that almost burnt the entire city down and how it’s people came together to rebuild and forge forward to rebuild their beloved city. Historical  Museums, Museum of Modern Art and locals who love their city and are more than happy to talk with you about it; plenty of culture and learning at every corner.

Wandering the sidewalks of San Francisco was a great way to spend time with my family.
