Port Douglas
In June 2014 we took the kids up to Port Douglas for a week. It’s a great time of year to head up to North Queensland and escape the winter chills.
Port Douglas is a fantastic destination with an amazing range of activities to keep everyone happy. We took a day trip up to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation with Billy Tea Safari’s, which I can’t recommend highly enough. The day included a Daintree River cruise where we spotted plenty of native wildlife such as crocs and snakes, guided walks through the forest, a BBQ lunch, a visit to a wildlife sanctuary where we fed and patted kangaroos, as well as the chance to have a dip at the beach at Cape Tribulation. Our guide was a local man who was very knowledgeable and friendly and made the day fun for all.
We also did a day trip to the outer reef with Quicksilver cruises. It’s about an hour cruise from the Marina out to the pontoon at the Agincourt reef where we spent the day snorkelling and viewing the sea life from the underwater observatory and semi submersible boat. For an additional fee it is also possible to include a scuba diving experience for an even closer look at the reef. The many options of viewing the reef makes this an enjoyable day for passengers of all ages. A buffet lunch at the platform is included as is morning and afternoon tea on the cruise. This was a great day but a word of caution, don’t forget to take your sea sickness tablets as it can get a little rough on the journey to and from the pontoon.
We spent the rest of our time relaxing at the beach, walking to the many local lookouts, swimming in the hotel pool, and exploring the shops and restaurants. Although we didn’t get to include them on this trip, other suggested activities include the Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Rail, and for the more adventurous white water rafting. I’d recommend a trip to Port Douglas for people of all ages, as you can do as much or as little as you like.
