Journey Through the Rockies: Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff
Travelling through the Canadian Rockies on the Rocky Mountaineer in April is a breathtaking early spring adventure. From the vibrant city of Vancouver to the alpine town of Banff, including stops in Jasper and Lake Louise along the way, every moment of the journey is filled with awe-inspiring scenery, luxury, and unforgettable experiences.
Our journey began in Vancouver, where boarding the train set the tone for the adventure ahead. From the very first mile, it was clear that this was no ordinary train ride. Panoramic windows offered unobstructed views of lush forests, sparkling rivers, and snow-capped peaks slowly giving way to early spring greenery.
We experienced both Silver Leaf and Gold Leaf service, each offering a unique way to enjoy the journey. From Vancouver to Kamloops, we travelled in Silver Leaf — a comfortable, single-level service with spacious seating and gourmet meals in the dining car. From Kamloops to Banff, we upgraded to Gold Leaf, which includes dome-level seating, larger windows, and elevated dining with freshly prepared meals, regional wines, and attentive service. Experiencing both services allowed us to enjoy the Rockies from different perspectives, each beautifully curated.
One of the first highlights was Jasper. We took a wildlife tour in the surrounding national park, spotting many local bears beginning to emerge from hibernation. We also saw mountain goats navigating rocky cliffs and graceful elk grazing in the valleys. The thrill of observing these animals in their natural environment was unforgettable, though the elusive moose remained hidden from view. The town itself is charming, but the surrounding scenery is what truly captivates, with towering mountains and pristine valleys that feel untouched.
Continuing along the spectacular Icefields Parkway, the journey revealed some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Rockies. Snow-dusted peaks, sweeping valleys, and glacial vistas unfolded at every turn, creating a sense of awe at the sheer scale and beauty of the mountains.
Banff and Lake Louise were equally unforgettable. Lake Louise, still completely frozen in April, presented a striking winter-alpine scene. The ice stretched across the entire lake, creating a serene and almost otherworldly landscape, with snow-covered peaks reflected in the frozen surface. In Banff, we enjoyed a horse ride with Banff Trail Riders, experiencing the rugged alpine trails firsthand, followed by a ride up the gondola for sweeping panoramic views over the town and surrounding mountains. These experiences provided a perfect balance of adventure, comfort, and breathtaking scenery.
Travelling in April had its advantages. The off-peak season meant fewer crowds, more intimate experiences at scenic stops, and crisp, clear spring days that highlighted the beauty of the Rockies. Wildlife was more active, and the calm atmosphere onboard allowed us to fully appreciate the grandeur of the mountains and rivers.
From Vancouver’s west coast to the alpine splendor of Jasper, Banff, and frozen Lake Louise, the Rocky Mountaineer offers a journey that combines breathtaking scenery with comfort, luxury, and adventure. Whether enjoying the Silver Leaf experience or the indulgence of Gold Leaf, every mile is filled with unforgettable moments.
For anyone considering a Rocky Mountaineer journey, this Vancouver to Banff route in April is a spectacular choice. From early spring wildlife encounters and the dramatic Icefields Parkway to horse rides, gondola views, and the frozen majesty of Lake Louise, this adventure leaves a lasting impression.
