How our Travel evolves over time
After years of helping travellers plan meaningful holidays, I’ve noticed something interesting — the way we travel changes as we do.
In our 20s and 30s, travel is often about squeezing in as much as possible: more cities, more sights, more days on the go. But as we get older, priorities shift. Comfort, pacing, meaningful experiences and returning home feeling refreshed start to matter far more than ticking off a list.
Yet many travellers still choose holidays the same way they did years ago — based on price, star ratings, or how many places an itinerary covers. That’s often where disappointment begins.
Here are the things I encourage travellers to consider when planning their next journey.
COMFORT IS THE NEW LUXURY
A great itinerary isn’t the one that covers the most ground — it’s the one that gives you time to enjoy it. Constant hotel changes, long road journeys and rushed sightseeing can turn a holiday into hard work. Two or three nights in each destination often creates a far richer experience.
THE RIGHT SEASON CHANGES EVERYTHING
Weather can make or break a trip. Extreme heat, humidity, heavy rain or freezing temperatures can impact how much you enjoy being out and about. Choosing the right month is just as important as choosing the right destination.
KNOW THE ACTIVITY LEVEL
very holiday has a different pace. Some involve long walks, uneven paths or packed schedules; others are slower and more relaxed. Being honest about what feels comfortable helps ensure the trip stays enjoyable from start to finish.
THE JOURNEY MATTERS TOO
Travel itself can be tiring. Multiple layovers, overnight flights, long transfers and hours on the road can drain your energy before you even arrive. Simpler flight paths and convenient timings make a huge difference.
CONVENIENCE BEATS FIVE STAR MARBLE FLOORS
Luxury isn’t always about the hotel rating. A centrally located property with easy access, nearby dining, elevators and good medical support often provides far more comfort than a remote five?star resort.
FOOD SHOULD BE EASY
Food is deeply personal. Whether someone prefers lighter meals, vegetarian options or familiar flavours, having those needs met removes a major source of stress while travelling.
SAFETY CREATES PEACE OF MIND
Destinations with reliable transport, good healthcare, clean surroundings and tourist?friendly infrastructure allow travellers to relax and enjoy the experience.
THE RIGHT COMPANY MAKES THE JOURNEY
Some of the best travel memories come from the people you share them with. When travellers with similar interests and expectations explore together, the experience becomes richer — and friendships often last long after the holiday ends.
PRICE ISN'T THE WHOLE STORY
A lower price doesn’t always mean better value. Flights, accommodation quality, meals, transfers, entrance fees, tour managers and pacing all shape the experience. Sometimes paying a little more saves you a lot later — financially and emotionally.
QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING BEFORE YOU BOOK
• Will this itinerary feel comfortable or rushed?
• Is the weather right for the dates?
• How much walking is involved?
• Are the flights and transfers convenient?
• Is the hotel accessible and well located?
• Will my food preferences be supported?
• Is the destination safe and easy to navigate?
• Does this trip genuinely match how I like to travel?
If most answers are “yes,” you’re probably choosing the right holiday.
MY BIGGEST LEARNING
Great travel isn’t measured by how many countries you visit — it’s measured by how you feel when you return.
Did you travel comfortably? Did you create meaningful memories? Did you truly experience the destination?
If the answer is yes, then it was a journey worth taking.
