Namibia Day 2

The next morning our adventure of 2845 kilometres began. We headed southwest towards the Namib Desert. Approximately every 100 kilometres the colour and the landscape changes dramatically. It is a photographer and geologists dream! We travelled through candle bush and brittle thorn farming land before arriving at the bizarre Conny’s coffee shop for lunch. This small, renown establishment at Klein Aub is run by Gunther who takes pride in his service of coffee and homemade ice cream. We then continued our 5 hour trip to Sossusviei to spend 2 nights at Camp Sossus in the Namib Desert.

Camp Sossus, established in 2018 is made up of a reception area and 8 permanent freestanding, solar powered tents, aligned with stones and recyclable oil drums. It is set in a stark and mesmerising landscape. On our visit the camp was run by 4 very capable men who did everything. Cooking, cleaning, refilling the water for the bucket showers and so on. The camp was comfortable with all the necessary amenities yet still retained a rustic feel of true wilderness. It offered authenticity at the expense of traditional luxury. Sleeping outside on the roof, beneath the stars made it the best day ever.

Tourist travel to this area to experience the highest free standing sand dunes in the world and see the fossilized camelthorn tree forest set on a white clay pan at Deadvlei.
