Namibia Day 4

By being a visitor to the desert, you can also leave it and this happened on day 4 as we headed northwest again through a stark, fascinating landscape to meet the coast at Walvis Bay. We stopped at the small settlement of Solitaire to try apple crumble at McGregor’s bakery before crossing the Tropic of Capricorn. We passed by granite rock mountains, rolling barren hills that had tectonic folds before descending onto the flat white sand of the coast. Photo collage: Tectonic folded mountain,

Walvis Bay is the second largest city in Namibia, boasting a large commercial port. For my optional excursion I chose a Catamaran harbour cruise to see the Cape fur seal colony and bottle nose dolphins. This cruise made it the best day ever as we explored the deep, natural harbour watching seals swimming in circles as pups were taught to swim. December is the breeding season, so there were over 150,000 seals on the beach, many of them pups. We also saw a hump back whale, flamingos, dolphins, pelicans plus many other birds.
