Discovering Fiji: A Journey Through Paradise

Returning to Fiji after six years felt like reuniting with an old friend, the kind that wraps you in warmth and nostalgia. As a Matai Agent, part of Fiji Tourism's specialist program, my goal was to refresh my knowledge and immerse myself in the beauty of the islands once more. I was particularly eager to inspect two island resorts that have captured the attention of my clients: Castaway and Mololo Island.

Where I Stayed

Our adventure kicked off at The Intercontinental at Natadola Bay—a grand resort sprawling over 35 acres. However, the weather during our stay on the mainland was less than ideal, casting a shadow over my overall experience. While the resort boasted luxury, I found the food lacking in authenticity, and the atmosphere felt more corporate than traditional. The expansive pool area, devoid of any music or ambiance, contributed to a sense of detachment from the Fijian spirit. I found myself yearning for something more intimate and genuine.

Then we made our way to the Mamanuca Islands, and I was immediately struck by the inviting ambiance of Musket Cove. Staying in the Lagoon Bures, equipped with kitchens and charming decks overlooking the serene lagoon, was a highlight. The energy at the main pool and restaurant was full of holiday vibes, especially during our dinner where live music filled the air, creating a joyful atmosphere. The Trader Café was another gem, offering fresh smoothies and delightful pizzas with a breathtaking view of a massive banyan tree—a perfect spot for both relaxation and socializing.

Next up was Plantation Island, an excellent choice for families on a budget. The beachfront Bure Rooms were especially appealing, offering a lovely combination of comfort and proximity to the beach. In stark contrast, Lomani Island Resort provided a peaceful adults-only experience, ideal for couples seeking solitude. The bungalows, complete with private plunge pools, promised a romantic escape.

Upon arriving at Mololo Island, I was instantly enchanted by its natural beauty. The long jetty leading to the resort was adorned with staff singing a welcoming song—a heartwarming touch that set the tone for my stay. This resort is proudly Fijian-owned and operated, and it truly showed in the delightful customer service. Our private picnic on Honeymoon Island was the epitome of paradise: a stunning white sand beach, an exquisite seafood lunch complete with champagne, and fantastic snorkeling off the beach made for an unforgettable experience.

Castaway Island, another highly anticipated stop on our journey, did not disappoint. We stayed in the South Beach Bures, renowned for their privacy and direct ocean views. The restaurant served delicious meals, and dinner at the specialty restaurant 1880 was a culinary highlight—truly a must-try. We even participated in coral planting to help rejuvenate the reef, an experience that felt rewarding and meaningful. The new water park added an extra layer of fun, making this resort ideal for families and multi-generational groups.

Our final island experience was at the Sheraton Tokoriki Resort. Unfortunately, this resort didn’t resonate with me as it felt more akin to a Bali getaway rather than a true Fijian escape. The pool was noisy, and the concrete pathways were cracked and uninviting. It was a jarring contrast to the natural beauty of the islands.

We returned to the mainland for our last night at the Hilton. The two-bedroom beachfront apartments were comfortable, with cozy beds and the luxury of a laundry service—an unexpected treat during travel. The Bula Bus provided convenient transfers, making it an excellent option for pre- and post-stays in Denarau.

Moments That Moved Me

One of the most memorable moments was our private picnic on Honeymoon Island. We arrived at a secluded beach, greeted by the gentle sound of waves lapping at the shore. The exquisite seafood lunch paired with champagne was a feast for the senses, and the snorkeling revealed vibrant coral and fascinating marine life. This experience encapsulated the essence of a true Fijian getaway—a blend of natural beauty, delicious food, and heartfelt hospitality.

Fijian Culture

While we didn’t engage in cultural tours this trip, the warmth of the locals was palpable. The ubiquitous “Bula!” (hello) is more than just a greeting; it's a reflection of the welcoming spirit that defines Fiji. The sweet, floral scent of frangipani hung in the air, enhancing the sensory richness of the experience.

Why I Recommend Fiji

Fiji is truly a destination for every type of traveller. Its proximity to Australia makes it an accessible escape, while each island offers unique experiences that cater to families, honeymooners, and adventure seekers alike. Whether quad biking with Go Dirty tours or simply lounging on pristine beaches, Fiji has something for everyone.
