Portugal is a land of enchanting beaches, captivating culture, and scenic landscapes, and it became the perfect destination for my daughter, Bianca, and me to embark on a memorable adventure in the late summer of 2022. Armed with a spirit of exploration and a sense of adventure, we decided to explore Portugal's hidden gems, and our journey was a blend of coastal beauty, cultural exploration, and camping escapades.
The Itinerary
Salema Eco Camp, Lagos:
Our journey began in the tranquil coastal village of Salema, located in the stunning Algarve region. With our trusty Avis rental car, we set up camp at the Salema Eco Camp, nestled amidst the lush greenery and just a stone's throw from the beautiful Salema Beach. The camp provided a perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in nature while enjoying the comforts of modern camping. We spent our days exploring the golden sands and crystal-clear waters of the Lagos coast, a paradise for beach lovers.
Portimao:
Next stop, Portimao! This vibrant coastal city welcomed Bianca and me with open arms. We indulged in local cuisine, strolled along the bustling promenades, and even took a thrilling boat tour of the famous sea caves of Ponta da Piedade. The azure waters and stunning rock formations left us in awe of Mother Nature's artistry.
Lisbon:
Leaving the coastline behind for a while, Bianca and I headed to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. We spent two unforgettable nights at the heart of the city in Rosio Square, immersing ourselves in its rich history, vibrant street art, and delectable pastries. From the historic neighbourhoods of Alfama to the grandeur of Belém, Lisbon's charm captured our hearts.
Oporto (Porto):
Our journey then took us to the northern city of Oporto, known for its picturesque riverside views and the world-famous port wine. We explored the historic Ribeira District, enjoyed a boat ride along the Douro River, and sampled some of the finest wines in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Oporto's authenticity and warmth left lasting impressions.
Figueira da Foz:A picturesque coastal town on our way back south, Figueira da Foz was a pit stop that added an unexpected charm to our journey. We learned that cash was essential here, making it an essential travel tip for future adventurers. The beach, the seafood, and the welcoming locals made it worth the visit.
Costa da Caparica and Nazaré
The adventure continued as we explored Costa da Caparica, where pristine beaches stretched as far as the eye could see. But the real thrill came in Nazaré, renowned for its towering waves that attract daredevil surfers from around the world. Bianca and I witnessed the awe-inspiring spectacle and felt the adrenaline rush from the shore.
Why Portugal
Throughout our three-week journey, Bianca and I discovered why Portugal is a traveller's dream. Its diverse landscapes, warm hospitality, and rich cultural heritage make it an ideal destination for all types of travellers. Whether you're a beach lover, a history buff, or an adventure seeker, Portugal has something to offer.
How They Got There
Bianca and I flew to Portugal with Etihad and Turkish Airlines, making our way to this European gem. We rented a car through Avis, ensuring the freedom to explore the country at our own pace, and it proved to be a wise decision.
