Tips to stay safe whilst abroad

When we are on vacation, we tend to let our guard down. Staying safe when you are on your vacation is paramount.

Here are some important tips to keep safe at all times :

1. Have a copy of your accommodation details in hand - either a snapshot on your phone or a hard copy in your bag that you carry with you when you are out. Always good to have a hard copy just in case your phone battery dies.

2. Ensure you are well Insured and have registered with SMART TRAVELLER -  travel insurance could save you lots of money when you are overseas. Ensure that you are adequately covered. Register with Smart Traveller so that you get updates on what's happening in the city you are visiting.

3. Avoid walking alone at night - Walk slightly behind a couple. It sounds a little creepy, but you don’t want to stand out as walking alone. Especially as a girl, the couple you could be following will usually get the vibe with a smile. Obviously, don’t follow them home, but stay on the same side of the street as them.

4. Avoid dark and non-tourist areas at night - Danger usually lurks in these unfamiliar territories. Keep safe.

5. If you think you are being followed - Stop to ask security or a public place for help. You can walk into a hotel that’s not yours to ask for help. Whatever you do, don’t walk to where you’re staying.

6. Keep cash in more than 1 location - In case you get robbed, you won't lose all your cash.

7.  Get a sturdy bag or wear your backpack facing front - Not something with a thin strap that can be broken, nor a clutch that can be grabbed, nor a wallet in a front or back pocket.

8. Don't bring attention to yourself as being a tourist - Especially if alone or in a small group.

9. Dress appropriately so as not to attract unnecessary attention - Respect the culture of the country you are visiting and dress accordingly.

10. Don't wear jewellery - Keep them locked in your room. Unless you’re staying in a luxury hotel and have their private cabs driving you and picking you up.

11. Don't take cabs that are not registered with the city - check with the locals as to what's the safest way to get around.

12. If you are in a bar, do not leave your drink unattended- keep your glass in your hand and be wary of what goes on around you. Try to keep alcohol intake in moderation, unless you have a reliable person with you at all times.

13. Notify your loved ones, friends and family of your whereabouts - This is to keep them sane and also if something goes wrong, someone would know your last whereabouts.

14. When touring, try and join tour groups - You can enjoy your independence even when touring in the group.

15. Last but not least - Trust your instincts. If the place you are headed towards does not feel safe to you, listen to your gut.

We all want to have an exclusive experience when we travel, we love to explore and have all the fun in the world and let our guard down. We a do all of that with a little caution. always pay attention to your surroundings.
