Vietnam - December 2013
I recently visited Vietnam spending most of my time in Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An. Three days is plenty of time to take in the sensory explosion that is Vietnam's biggest city Ho Chi Minh City. The historic sites and food are amazing and day trips to the Cu Chi tunnel complex and the Mekong River past rice paddies and houseboats are a couple of the must sees.
I took a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels which is approx. 1 hour and 15 minute coach ride or you can opt for a speed boat ride. The coach ride seemed relatively short as our guide was so entertaining. Once there you have the option of experiencing these very small and eerie tunnels first hand (although not compulsory). The trip will take you back to understand how hard life was during the wartime which is beyond human imagination.
The War Remnants Museum is also a must and displays photos ammunition remnants aircraft and machinery of the Vietnam War through Vietnamese eyes but best to bring the tissues. I also visited the bustling Ben Thanh Market where you can bargain for clothes food handbags etc. I particularly loved Hoi An, a picturesque world heritage listed town situated where the Thu Bon river meets the ocean. Walking down the cobblestone streets of the World Heritage listed Hoi-An, you are faced with tailor after tailor. Every second shop in this town will offer to make you a new pair of shoes, suit, dress, or jacket. The choices are endless.
The food is also beautiful and from around 3pm there are happy hours galore! Cocktails from around VND65000 (AUD3.50) and beers from VND18000 (AUD1). The most we paid for dinner including drinks entrée and main was $AUD25 for 2 people. Some of my restaurant recommendations are Lantern Town, Morning Glory and Green Moon. Vietnam is definitely up there with one of my favourite destinations.
