Bring back the Sunday drive
Bring back the Sunday drive
If you're looking at planning a big trip but it still seems like miles away, a weekend road trip. Here are 5 of Victoria’s most iconic drives.
The Black Spur
Great for a half or full day trip, the 20km stretch from Healesville to Narbethong is the perfect Sunday drive. Don’t miss Marysville, Healesville Sanctuary, Yarra Valley Railway, Bruno's Art & Sculpture Garden.
Great Ocean Road
Most people take visitors on the 202km drove from Torquay to Peterborough to show off our state. It takes 1-2 days to tick the Twelve Apostles, Apollo Bay, Great Otway National Park, Erskine Falls and lots of ferns off the list along the way.
Great Alpine Road
The Great Alpine Road is how most people get to the ski resorts of Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, but also has a lot of variety along the way. Wangaratta to Bairnsdale is 310kms apart and it’ll take 2-4 days to see stunning snow-capped mountains, Danny's Lookout, Razorback Trail, Dinner Plain, Bogong High Plains and Milawa, the gourmet capital of the north-east.
South Gippsland Highway
This is the way to Wilsons Promontory, one of Victoria’s great natural icons. It’s a day trip of 140kms and a beautiful route to a beauty spot. You’ll find lots of little art and craft shops on the way in Fish Creek.
Calder Highway
If you’re after a drive, just for the sake of driving, check out Bendigo to Mildura. The 400km drive will take you 1-2 days of quite unique community traits along the way. The Mallee is one of them - wide, flat and open, just not as red as the Outback.
And what’s a road trip without the pit stops for food! The Bakehouse in Bridgewater, has the best jelly slice in the state and you can grab a vanilla slice in Ouyen.
And if you’re missing the type of car appropriate for weekend drives, consider hiring one. What’s fit for your holidays elsewhere is equally doable when you’re in your home country (or state!). It’s all part of what I do as your travel advisor.
