Macau

This was an interesting place to see. I just went for the day, which was very easy to do. You catch the hydrofoil from Hong Kong side or Kowloon side. It takes around an hour but it is a pretty trip past lots of islands. It is better to just buy a one way ticket, because if you buy a round trip one, you have to nominate the time you want to come back, which you don’t really want to do as you may want to stay longer. The ferries run 24 hours from the Hong Kong side, so no problem getting back. You can also purchase a super class ticket, which is about $20 cheaper than the normal way, either one is fine.

When you arrive into Macau you go through passport and customs (Make sure you take your passport) and you just proceed as you would at an airport. Depending on the day and time, you can take 5 minutes to get through, or 30 minutes. Taxis are very cheap on Macau, so don’t hesitate to use them. The tip is though, that when you come out of the ferry terminal, all the main casinos have free shuttle buses so you just pick which one you want, and the transfer is free.

There are three main areas of Macau, one is Taipa joined to Macau by a bridge, and the other is Coloane. We got the Venetian shuttle, had a look around this casino which is together with the Four Seasons, and this is over on Taipa. We were recommended to a typical Portuguese restaurant by a Restaurateur in Hong Kong. It is also in Taipa and it is called O Santos.

It is in a bit of a funny Chinatown sort of area, but don’t be put off by this, it is very clean inside and the food was great, all typical Portuguese meals. There is also another very highly recommended restaurant called Fernandos. We then got a taxi back to Macau to Senado Square which is the historic part of the city where the coloured buildings area and you can walk to the ruins of St Pauls which are very famous. We then got a taxi back to one of the casinos in the Macau area, you can go to either Wynns, MGM and once finished, you just use their free shuttle back to the ferry terminal.
