An Emerging Destination

IF YOU LOVE AFRICA ....

An emerging destination - Sierra Leone, perhaps not for the faint-hearted; more for those with an adventurous spirit; worth considering if you are someone who likes to journey on the roads less travelled.

Freetown

Founded in 1787 by the British, the nation’s capital, Freetown, started as a settlement for freed slaves who sided with the British during the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, many of the first settlers died of disease but Freetown served as a destination for freed American slaves until about 1885. Their descendants are known as the Creole people.

Bunce Island

Travel north from Freetown up the Sierra Leone River and you arrive at Bunce Island, a place that was once the base of one of the most lucrative slave trading operations in West Africa. For over 100 years from the late sixteenth century, hundreds of thousands of West Africans became victims of the slave trade. All that is left now are the remains of a fortified trading post with ancillary buildings, referred to as a ‘slave castle’.

Turtle Islands

The natural beauty of these seven islands surrounded by white, shimmering sand and clear aquamarine water, encapsulates the mean of a true tropical paradise.

Gola Rainforest National Park

Gola is the largest-remaining tract of Upper Guinean Forest and home to 49 mammal species (including the pygmy hippo and forest elephant), 327 bird species, and 200 types of trees. The forest also provides sanctuary for the world’s second-largest population of the Western chimpanzee.
