Bali

Bali is a fantastic place for that simple getaway from Australia. It's cheap and easy and the locals are very friendly. Upon arrival, you will need to purchase a visa costing USD25 so best to carry this amount in cash. In Bali, You can live it up in one of the amazing 5 star resorts or have a private villa with your own pool.

If it's the cheap holiday that you are after there are many budget accommodations to suit your needs. Getting around is simple and cheap. You will generally need to negotiate the price for a taxi prior to leaving or else you may run the risk of being over charged. I'd recommend steering clear of the main tourist points to flag a taxi. If you just walk a few streets away you should find that you will be less likely to be over charged - however you should still haggle. My general rule of thumb is to haggle to 50% of the original asking price. This goes for taxis and street shopping. You cannot negotiate the price in restaurants or in most general shopping centres.

If you are brave, you can also use the locals on scooters as a mode of transport - this is generally about half of the price of taxis. For a fun and easy way of getting around, you can also hire your own scooters for around $4 a day. This is loads of fun, but can also be a little hectic, so be careful and make sure that you have travel insurance that will cover moped hire.

There are many beach clubs that you can visit, which are basically private bars/clubs on the beach where you can rent cabana’s or beach chairs and have the service of food and beverage waiters. A quiet beach club, a little out of Seminyak that I would recommend is called Mosaic. Seminyak is the most popular area to stay/visit now. I would steer clear of Kuta, unless you are after super cheap bars, food and accommodation. This area is frequented by budget travellers these days.

Ubud is certainly worth the day trip to see a different side of Bali. There are loads of tours that will take you there however if you are not too fussed on doing something organised, it is very easy and cheap to negotiate a daily price with a local taxi. Uluwatu is also a great place to visit. I negotiated a price of approximately $50 x 2 adults for a full 10 hour day with a taxi driver. In this time we managed to visit Sanur, Ubud and Uluwatu (in that order). Uluwatu is great to visit at sunset as there are beautiful cliffs and beach views.

We stayed at Bali Asri, Batubelig which I can 100% recommend. It is a bit pricier than your average 5 star property, however certainly worth the money. Our villa had a private full sized pull. Our breakfast was cooked to our liking in our private villa each morning and the decor was amazing. I could not fault this property at all.  It was an easy 5 minute walk to the beach and the recommended Mosaic Beach Club. Batubelig is approximately 5 minutes (by scooter) from Seminyak and is the perfect distance to be away from the crowds but close enough to the hub of things.
