Cruising the Magnificent Mediterranean

A recent breathtaking cruise led us to the magical lands encircling the jewel-like Mediterranean Sea which sits at the crossroads of three continents. Departing from the magnificent 'floating' Venice, we cruised blissfully towards the 'Jewels of the Agean', the Greek Islands.

The beauty, antiquity and contrast of these islands is unforgettable. Mykonos with its mix of glamour and simplicity; Santorini, the remarkable and breathtaking aftermath of a volcano in the sea; Monemvasia, the ‘Greek Gibralta’ - both ancient and modern merging; and Katakolon, gateway to the ancient site where the first Olympics were staged.

The magnificent panorama from the cliffs of crescent shaped Santorini, set against the sparkling Aegean (which on dusk becomes “wine-dark” according to Homer), was worth the 688 step climb from the sea below. Whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches line the cliffs. A wander along the cobble stoned streets, past spectacular cliff-perched accommodation, led us to a quaint and buzzing restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious and most memorable lunch of local seafood, wine and, of course, a breathtaking view. Although the island is still an active volcano, it has not erupted for about 3600 years. The famous Santorini sunset however sets the skies on fire – one you will never forget! You must see it, at least once!
