Where the Tide Takes Us: The Rise of Swim-Inspired Travel

There’s something magical about starting the day in the ocean. That familiar sting of salt on your skin, the rhythm of the waves, the quiet moments before the world wakes up — it grounds you. It also connects you to something much bigger.

As part of the Bold & Beautiful swim community in Manly, NSW, I’ve often found myself reflecting on how this love of the water doesn’t just shape my mornings — it shapes the way I travel, too.

More and more, I’ve noticed a shift in how people are planning their getaways. It’s no longer just about ticking off landmarks or lounging by the pool (though there’s a time and place for both!). There’s a growing desire for connection — to nature, to wellness, to movement, and to the ocean.

Here are just a few swim-inspired travel trends that seem to be making waves lately:

 Ocean Wellness Retreats

From the Greek Islands to Byron Bay, there’s a rise in retreats that incorporate cold-water therapy, open-water swimming, breathwork, and ocean mindfulness. It’s not about spa treatments and cocktails — it’s about resetting through nature.

 Swim Safaris & Swimcations

Yes, that’s a thing! Guided swim holidays are gaining popularity, especially in places like Croatia, the Amalfi Coast, and the Maldives. Think boat-based trips where you swim different stretches of coastline each day, supported by a guide and a small group of fellow ocean lovers.

 Water-Based Cultural Journeys

Some destinations naturally tie water into their identity. Japan’s onsens and river towns, Iceland’s geothermal baths, or the floating markets and canals of Southeast Asia — all offer beautiful ways to connect with water in more reflective or local ways.

 Everyday Rituals on the Road

For many of us, finding a way to keep up our swim routines while travelling is a must. I’ve found myself mapping out coastal paths, checking tide times, or seeking out local swim groups wherever I go. There’s something really special about diving into unfamiliar waters — it makes the world feel both big and beautifully small.

So while travel and swimming might seem like different worlds, they’re actually tied by something deeper: a sense of freedom, curiosity, and connection. Whether it’s your daily swim at Manly or a future dip somewhere far from home — it’s all about where the tide takes us.
