Discovering the Kimberley: Luxury, Adventure and a Journey of Discovery
Some journeys change the way you see the world. My recent 10-night Kimberley expedition aboard Ponant’s Le Jacques Cartier, sailing from Broome to Darwin, was one of them.
The Kimberley is one of Australia’s last great wilderness frontiers, and exploring it by expedition ship offers an extraordinary perspective on this remote and spectacular region. Towering sandstone escarpments, dramatic waterfalls, ancient rock art, incredible wildlife and ever-changing tidal landscapes made every day an adventure.
One of the most moving highlights was meeting the Traditional Owners, who generously shared their stories, culture and deep connection to Country. Walking with them to discover ancient Gwion Gwion and Wandjina rock art added a profound cultural dimension to the journey.
An expedition team that brings the Kimberley to life
What truly elevated the experience was Ponant’s exceptional expedition team. Passionate specialists, researchers and experienced expedition leaders shared their knowledge of geology, ecology, history and conservation, transforming every landing into an opportunity to learn.
On our first day, they told us, “By the end of this voyage, you’ll love rocks and reptiles as much as we do!”
They were absolutely right.
Their enthusiasm was infectious. Whether we were discovering an ancient rock formation, spotting a rare bird or watching a reptile basking in the sun, their genuine excitement made us see the Kimberley through new eyes.
Daily lectures and documentaries on board added another layer, preparing us for the landscapes and wildlife ahead and helping us better understand the places we had explored. At times, it felt like a floating university wrapped in five-star luxury.
Where French elegance meets Australian adventure
Ponant’s distinctive French heritage brings something special to the experience. Elegant hospitality, exceptional cuisine, fine wines and attentive service create a level of comfort that beautifully complements the raw wilderness outside.
And the balance between adventure and relaxation is just right. You can spend the day exploring remote landscapes by Zodiac, or simply take in the scenery at your own pace.
Back on board, there was plenty to enjoy too, from wine tastings, trivia and fitness classes to line dancing, karaoke and evenings spent connecting with fellow travellers. Gala Night and the much-anticipated White Night added a wonderfully celebratory touch.
A journey that stays with you
As a luxury travel advisor, I believe there is no substitute for experiencing a destination firsthand. I returned from the Kimberley inspired, humbled and even more passionate about sharing this extraordinary part of Australia with my clients.
The Kimberley is bigger, wilder and more beautiful than photographs can convey. Its vast landscapes, extraordinary colours and profound sense of stillness stay with you long after you return home.
This isn't simply a cruise. It's a voyage of discovery, and one you'll remember for years to come.
If you're dreaming of an extraordinary Australian adventure where luxury meets exploration, I'd love to help you experience the Kimberley for yourself.
