Where to find me if I go missing in winter...

It’s a big call, but I think this years’ trip to Falls Creek may have been my best ski trip ever. Certainly, as far as our ski trips as a family go, it was right up there.

While the spectacular snow and amazing company we enjoyed can’t be guaranteed, I’d definitely recommend you put Falls Creek on the list of ski resorts to be visited.

Falls Creek is a full ski in ski out village, so from the moment you leave the carpark, you are on the snow. The on-snow transportation gets you and your luggage to the hotel, and there is a village shuttle to get you from one end of the village to the other, but otherwise, you are walking through a snowy wonderland…the kids loved it.

We stayed at the very lovely Falls Creek Hotel, at the Village Bowl. This is the top end of the village, and right by the Eagle Express chairlift, so you can be straight out the door and onto a chairlift in under 2 minutes.
The Falls Creek Hotel is run by a very welcoming Falls Creek local couple and suited us perfectly. Dinner and breakfast were included in the room rate, and the food was beautiful – cauliflower and thyme risotto, huge T-bone steaks, quite the best chocolate brownie I’ve had in years…all yum! The best part was they served kids dinner early, complete with supervision from a couple of nannies, who then took the kids into the lounge next door to play games while we ate our dinner in peace. Let’s be honest, not having to cook or clean up for a week played a significant part in how relaxing this trip was, but knowing the kids were fed and having a ball while we enjoyed amazing food and good company was really the icing on the cake.

The rooms are fairly simple, but warm and comfortable. I should warn you that there is no lift, so if like us you are on the 3rd floor, there is quite a hike up and down the stairs in all your ski gear…but it did help burn off all the cooked breakfasts!

While Falls Creek doesn’t have the total skiable area of Perisher, it does have plenty of runs to suit all abilities and runs on different faces of the mountains so there is usually a spot to get out the weather if it is particularly snowy or windy. We were lucky to have some absolutely amazing powder to play in, but when that got too heavy on the legs there were heaps of great groomed runs as well.

All in all, I highly rate Falls Creek as a ski field – particularly for families, but there really is something for everyone.

I’ll leave it there for now while we’re dreaming of knee-deep powder, bluebird skies and chocolate brownies…but I’m always happy to talk skiing if you’d like any more info.
